Fuchsia triphylla hybrid ('Gartenmeister')
Fuchsia flower

Zone: 9 to 11

Soil: Sand to loam

Light: Mostly shady

Bloom colour: Red

Bloom period: May to September

Height: 1 to 2 feet

Moisture: Medium to moist

Attracts: Hummingbirds.

Notes: This fuchsia cultivar is a perennial only in warm winter climates. Everywhere else, you must either treat it as an annual or bring it inside for the winter. This cultivar has the perfect long tubular red flowers for hummingbirds. The plant will tolerate sun but it will simply not produce as many flowers, so it is best to find a shady place that gets indirect light. It may be a hassle to bring it inside for the winter, but the long bloom period makes it a valuable plant for a hummingbird garden. It remains one of the more popular plants for hummingbirds that visit my garden. Since these plants hang downwards, hummingbirds have to sip nectar from underneath the flower. These plants will therefore be visited more frequently by hummingbirds if they are elevated in a series of hanging baskets.
